About Us

Sue Hevey the Owner of Clay Mates has brought much happiness and many smiles to families throughout the years with her creative studio Clay Mates since her opening in October of 1994. Sue is qualified and certified in the ceramic field and has had the love of paint, which started for her in grade school and never faded, that love has continued to expand throughout the past 47 years and is a passion she truly enjoys sharing with everyone.  Sue began taking her own ceramics classes back in 1976 and then went on sharing her knowledge with a few close friends in her basement studio of her home back in in 1983. Upon receiving her ceramics certification and winning best of show in the Pioneer Valley Ceramics Association competition, owning her own studio became her aspiration and her dream! Clay Mates is not just a studio, it is a place, a place where you are able to express your creativity to a physical form and cherish for years! Clay Mates mission is to provide ceramics classes/ paint your own pottery & arts and crafts workshops that are available to everybody, beginner through advanced, all ages & ability levels. Clay Mates, strives to create an environment of fun, creativity and individuality, where there are no definitive expectations, and everyone can gain a sense of accomplishment that will inevitably lead to confidence and self-esteem. Sue graciously shares her talents with the local school systems, senior citizens council, scouts and Individuals with challenges and once they began utilizing her skill in turn it has enriched their lives. At Clay Mates, you learn hands-on the many techniques now available to create the look you want. Antiquing, glazing, dry-brushing and color washes to name a few. Beautiful finishes that help your projects take on a mother-of pearl shine, a rustic wooden texture, or a stone-like effect. With an extensive range of quality acrylic craft paints in stock and ready to use, a large stock of brushes and containers and a wide selection of bisque for every lifestyle and skill level you are able to satisfy your cravings for creativity on site with convenient daily firings, so your projects move right along, Clay Mates even offers Ready-to-paint ceramics to go, including delightful seasonal giftware and home decorations. Clay Mates studio has since become a meeting place for the community. A place to visit, make friends and experience the enjoyment and satisfaction that comes with expressing creativity.
